fertility plus

Be it to balance hormones and have a healthy menstrual cycle, hold a baby in your arms and have a healthy pregnancy, reduce anxiety, help you with migraines or support through perimenopause and menopause. It might be that you struggle with pelvic pain or vulvodynia.

You deserve to be able to do what it is you really want to do with energy and joy!

For those trying to conceive

Here you are beautiful, with a dream of holding a gorgeous baby in your arms. I love this for you!

Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or engaging with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), in one of its various forms (IVF, ICSI, IUI), I am here for you no matter who you are or how you are trying or what your love looks like.

I don’t use the word infertility, it is all a fertility journey… you would love to be gazing into your baby’s eyes.

You might have been told you have unexplained infertility and all that might mean is the reason you haven’t become pregnant hasn’t been found yet. It might be connected to your thyroid gland, your cycle (including ovulation) or lack of ,or hormonal issues, your nutrient status, your stress levels or a number of other situations that I will investigate for you. It might be that we need to do a bit of fertility detective work, and that’s okay. I will have a look at any testing you may have had up to this point and may advise some additional tests.

You will have a comprehensive fertility assessment and you will get a highly personalized plan.

What to expect

It is always preferable to allow at least a 3 month grace period (6 months is preferable) to nourish your body and make sure the egg that contributes to the making of the embryo is the best it can be.

As a qualified Nutritionist and Naturopath, I know the importance of investigating diet and lifestyle and it might be that we can tweak a few things that make a difference for you. The fertility detective work in this space is my jam.

And as an Acupuncturist, I have found Acupuncture while trying to conceive naturally or with IVF an invaluable support. I have found in my 30 years of experience in this field that approaching your ‘uniqueness’ with a tailored approach prescription of herbal medicine or a supplement prescription specific for you may also be of great support.

A little side note…please know I am flexible and like to be available for you around the timing of your IVF cycles and procedures. In my clinical experience, I have found an acupuncture treatment on the day of your transfer and around 4-5 days after transfer may be of benefit.

I need help with my hormones

Hormones can be amazing and magical molecules…until they’re not!

If you were born with a uterus, hormones and menstrual cycles can seriously mess with your life.

In my clinic I see everyone from those struggling with PMS all the way to the other end, menopause, and every stage of life from the beginning of menstruation to well after your last period and everyone in between.

Do you experience any of these

Do you have painful periods or are they way too heavy or coming too frequently?

Do you get headaches or migraines before your period and do you get really irritable or emotional?

Do you have absent or irregular periods?

Is it endometriosis that is making your life miserable or is PCOS messing with your health?

Or do you think you are entering the often problematic perimenopausal phase or the sometimes challenging menopausal stage?

Some frequent visitors to the clinic

PMS (premenstrual syndrome)

This can constitute such an array of nasty, unwanted symptoms!  Pain, sore breasts, headaches, bowel changes, acne, nausea, irritability, depression…the list goes on.

Typically, PMS begins a few days to a week before your period but sometimes it can affect you for 2 weeks of every month and sometimes it can be worse at the very beginning of your period. So what you have is way too much time out of each month where you are suffering…I’m going to shout this…

Too often you get fobbed off with “suck it up, it’s just a period”. or “you’re exaggerating’, or “you’re making it up’ …you know if you know.

Endometriosis (Endo) presents in different ways for everyone…in some cases the pain is unbearable and can bring you to your knees, have you take days off work and life and sometimes the pain can make you vomit.

It is a chronic condition and it is more than a hot water bottle and a panadol can deal with! It can be problematic when trying to conceive but many people with endo have no trouble falling pregnant. Endometriosis is a disease where lesions that are similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grow in areas outside the uterus including fallopian tubes, bladder and bowel to name a few.

You might have pain before, during or after your period, pain with sex, pain with bowel motions or urination and pain in your lower back referring down your legs.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

PCOS tends to encourage longer cycles, sometimes periods are months apart, sometimes they are absent.

There may be a gain in weight, especially around the middle and without a change in diet – this might indicate metabolic syndrome and it might drive the polycystic ovary syndrome.

In PCOS there tends to be insulin resistance, increased androgens (and an increase in hirsutism or excess hair growth) acne and obesity.

Hh my goodness, where do we start?!?

We don’t talk about perimenopause enough and it is a real thing and it can start as early as mid to late thirties.

So, your hormones start changing, maybe your cycle changes or maybe your cycle stays the same as always but some wicked symptoms start to kick in…migraines, crazy irritability, insomnia, exhaustion.

Menopause doesn’t get nearly enough airtime does it?

We try to laugh off the hot flushes because after all, we are of a fabulous vintage and have been through so much more than what society thinks is just some sporadic sweats.

I am here to tell you that menopause can be sooo much more than a few hot flushes similar to a bit of time on the tropics.

So many emotions might be swirling around and creating some turbulence potentially messing with your everyday life in addition to being sleep deprived and exhausted.

Thyroid and adrenal glands

Your thyroid gland is part of your endocrine system and produces thyroid hormones important for metabolic health, basically your hormone health and if it isn’t functioning as it is meant to you might be struggling in so many ways.

You might be fatigued, cold all the time, losing hair, unable to sleep, unable to lose weight.

And if your poor old adrenal glands (adrenaline, estrogen and cortisol) are more like dried raisins than plump plums, you might be exhausted and have a whole bunch of other unpleasant symptoms that may impact other hormonal activity.

Pregnancy and postpartum support

Congratulations lovely! Pregnancy is quite magical isn’t it? You are growing a beautiful human in there.

It can also come with some challenges, sometimes growing a human isn’t so easy on the body. In a pure scientific sense it is a very high energy output situation so you will no doubt be fatigued. You might also experience nausea, insomnia, lower back pain, hip pain, possibly carpal tunnel, constipation, heartburn or reflux or maybe some headaches.

Just know that acupuncture might be wonderful support when you’re pregnant and bumping up against some challenges. Regular acupuncture treatments and the correct supplementation may assist in supporting you throughout your pregnancy.

Your food habits might be turned on their head too, but please be gentle with yourself, try to stay as nourished and rest when you can. Nourishing yourself well during pregnancy might just pay big dividends at the other end of your gestation period! Seek the right supplementation, there is so much stuff out there on retail shelves and on the internet.

Also, Acupuncture treatments to prepare you both for birthing might be something to consider.

And congratulations and a big “well done you!” beautiful …you now have a gorgeous additional family member!

Please remember you need to look after and nourish yourself right now too.

As mentioned above, pregnancy is a high energy expenditure time and your delightful munchkin has probably used a lot of your energy reserves (understatement!). Breast-feeding can continue this energy output so it is really important to supplement your nutrient dense diet and nurture yourself too.

Breastfeeding can occasionally cause neck issues, watching your beautiful baby while they are feeding is joy in itself. Or you could have some other physical issues left over from carrying your baby for 9 months…acupuncture might be just the thing!
